Legends of Ska, a showcase of old-school Ska artists from the early days of the musical movement, will take place this weekend at the Palais Royale ballroom (on Lakeshore Drive near where South Kingsway ends — here’s a map). Old school acts such as Derrick Morgan, Justin Hinds, Skatalites singer Doreen Shaffer and Prince Buster (one of whose songs was the inspiration for the name of the second-gen ska group Madness) will be there. These guys are the original skanksters who created ska back in the ’60’s, and it should be both a musical education for the young ‘uns who only know the Planet Smashers, Save Ferris and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and fun for anyone who likes ska’s syncopated rhythms.
The shows will take place on Friday and Saturday. The ticket price is a bit steep — $35 in adverce per night!. Paul and I are going to catch the Saturday show with Doreen Shaffer and the legendary Prince Buster.
