Slut School fact check

My friend Will McLean — the other half of our little Asian Gang called, surprising enough, “Asian Gang”, sets me straight on the history of Slut School. Because an institution called Slut School needs to have its history properly recounted, right?

Slut School’s latest DJ event, Big Booty Hoes and Sluts Too, takes place tonight at the I-V lounge. Details are here. I’ll be there because I’m that kind of guy.

Will writes:

Hey there Big boss, just a few corrections for your amazing recent updates:

When asked where Eva and their crew were going that night, Eva said “Just out to a club,” to which her mother replied “Looks like you’re going to Slut School to me!”

And thus Slut School got its name.

Slut School’s Founding members are actually friends of mine from Toronto. We didin’t go to high school together. Dorian and I did but I was introduced to the girls by an ex-girlfriend. The Deans of Slut School are Cathy “Madcrazy” Marchese, Eva “Purple” Haze and Crystal “the nice one, you know, with the boobs” Bevinspotto.

So is that Crystal in the poster? Inquiring accordion-playing minds want to know!

Graduates include Lisa, Cheralynn, Marta, Jazzna, Dorian, myself and Darcy. That is not the complete list but you get the gist, eh?

By the bye, loved the photos of Slut School. Quite nice.

Glad you liked ’em, Will, and I hope that all you readers out there in InterWebLand liked ’em too.

And they tried to tell me that computer programmers never meet girls. Liars!

Legends of Ska

Also this weekend in Accordion City: old school ska legends come to play live at the Palais Royale!

Graphic: Poster for 'Legends of Ska' event this weekend.

Legends of Ska, a showcase of old-school Ska artists from the early days of the musical movement, will take place this weekend at the Palais Royale ballroom (on Lakeshore Drive near where South Kingsway ends — here’s a map). Old school acts such as Derrick Morgan, Justin Hinds, Skatalites singer Doreen Shaffer and Prince Buster (one of whose songs was the inspiration for the name of the second-gen ska group Madness) will be there. These guys are the original skanksters who created ska back in the ’60’s, and it should be both a musical education for the young ‘uns who only know the Planet Smashers, Save Ferris and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and fun for anyone who likes ska’s syncopated rhythms.

The shows will take place on Friday and Saturday. The ticket price is a bit steep — $35 in adverce per night!. Paul and I are going to catch the Saturday show with Doreen Shaffer and the legendary Prince Buster.

For more details, check out the official Web site.

Happy anniversary, Rannie and Jay!

Rannie and Jason, a couple of nice guys whom I know through the GTABloggers (Greater Toronto Area Bloggers, that is) just celebrated their second anniversary. Congrats, guys!

Rannie, (another cool Toronto Filipino blogger) and Jay have been together for two years. They met over the ‘Net (which you’d think would be a portent of doom), but they’re really well-matched.

Photo: Jay and Rannie, lookin' sharp in their suits!

He’s a graphic designer. He’s a photographer. They fight crime! A sharp-lookin’ couple, no?

Happy anniversary to a handsome couple!

Global Pop Conspiracy social tonight

Toronto cool music collective Global Pop Conspiracy are having their regular Thursday social tonight at the Rotors Club.

Tonight, Special Beat Services (Electro Polaroid) will be doing both the video and music selections at the Global Pop Conspiracy social. They describe their act as “Past visions of the future, with today’s sounds for tomorrow.”

Global Pop Conspiracy socials. Go ahead, wear a big plush turtle suit. There’s no dress code!

As always, the socials take place at the Rotors Club, which is at 593a Bloor Street West, just west of Bathurst. It’s a licensed establishment, so you’ve got to be 19 or an even older fart like myself.

By the way, Global Pop Conspiracy also have a two clever mini-blogs on their main page called Intelligence and Counterintelligence. Great links and stories abound!

Art Strikes Back

Toronto’s inside workers’ strike means that the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition had to be cancelled. However, many artists rely on sales from that event for their income, so they’re banding together to have an exhibition and art sale this weekend called Art Strikes Back.

Graphic: Logo for Arts Strikes Back. Karin forwarded me an e-mail message about an event taking place this weekend here in Accordion City: Art Strikes Back. Here are the details:

ART STRIKES BACK: Casualties of the strike

>As you may have heard by now that despite all efforts the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition has been postponed due to the Toronto city workers strike. The new dates are now Aug 31 to September 2 2002 (Labour day weekend.) We will all be looking forward to that event.

Because many people depend on this annual event for significant proportion of their income, several artists will be opening their studios on what was supposed to be the weekend of the TOAE. Among these, 50 artists will be selling their work in one warehouse. A handout of the map of the other studio location will be there.

Saturday, July 13th: 10am to 8pm

Sunday July 14th: 10am to 6pm

376 Dufferin Street

(just south of Queen St.W, at rear entrance)

Not going to NYC this weekend

Not going to H2K2; Manhattan’s (and hackerdom’s) loss is Toronto’s gain.

My original plans were to go catch the H2K2 hacker conference taking place this weekend in New York, but the demands of work and a plan to zero my credit card balance mean that I’m staying here in town. While I do hope to visit one of my most favourite cities in the world (and one of my most favourite couples in the world) later this summer, it lokks as though I’ll have to switch to plan B. Luckily Toronto’s got lots going on right now, as future posts will attest.

The impending return of kode-fu.com

Yup, my DNS woes are over. For the not-so-Internet-technically inclined, it means that you’ll be able to type “kode-fu.com” instead of “www2.cyberpixels.com/~kode” to see this site and its blogs (although either will work). Just give the Internet a day or two to straighten itself out.
