Links-a-plenty

It’s a busy day for me today, but hopefully these links will tide you over…

‘Low-carb burgers’ are wrapped in lettuce. The American burger chains Hardee’s and Carl’s Jr. are introducing these. Cool, but did it have to be iceberg lettuce?

Hippies whining about the Atkins diet. The diet may prevent obesity, diabetes and related diseases, but we’ve got spotted owls to save here!

Soccer players are weird, man.

Craigblog. Craig “Craigslist” Newmark’s blog.

Five geek social fallacies. “Within the constellation of allied hobbies and subcultures collectively known as geekdom, one finds many social groups bent under a crushing burden of dysfunction, social drama, and general interpersonal wack-ness. It is my opinion that many of these never-ending crises are sparked off by an assortment of pernicious social fallacies — ideas about human interaction which spur their holders to do terrible and stupid things to themselves and to each other.”

A dearth of dating. The Boston Globe’s story on how dating is out and “friends with benefits” is in. In spite of stories like Worst Date Ever, I still prefer dating over um-friending.

The Japanese are weird, man.

Like, really weird, man.

I didn’t know that comic book lettering was a hotly-debated topic in the industry.

The most popular web page in Shelbyville. It’s for an organization called C.U.D.D.L.E., which is an acronym for Cousins United to Defeat Discriminating Laws through Education. In other words, a site about cousin marriage. Even if you find a topic a bit icky, they do have a useful chart that makes it easy to figure out what a “third cousin twice removed” is.

  • Comment on the Atkins crap. I can't eat carbs or sugars for medical reasons (my body doesn't know how to process them into energy), but so many people are loading up on the protein and meat and their cholesterol is going to go through the roof. I thought Atkins was going to be a great trend, since I have to eat low-carb as it is, but I still believe in eating as balanced as you can. Forget about the hug the planet crap... People might lose weight, but they're going to die from a goddamned heart attack before we can worry about how the diet affects the planet.

p.s. If you are worried about carbs, something to try, is just to check how many you're eating. A normal body should be able to process 4 carb units a meal. 1 carb unit ==15g carbs. Try whole grains, as they keep you feeling fuller longer, and you won't feel the need to snack as much later.

  • So, Carl's and Hardees have jumped on the band wagon.

But those of us In-N-Out aficionados have know about "Protein Style" for quite some time. (One of many items on the "secret" menu at In-N-Out. More info can be found here: http://www.zenlemur.com/innout.shtml.

And, on a somewhat related note: Years ago I wandered into the Barstow In-N-Out (half suspect this might have been during a DeathRace to DefCon) and thought I was being pretty damn funny when I ordered an Octuple-Octuple, (A play on thier standard Double-Double burger for those in the rest of the country.) expecting them to balk.

I was rather floored when the cashier didn't even blink an eye and just punched the thing in. Let alone the fact that they could parse the term "octuple", they had a clear way to key this in on the register.

I wound up having to pay for and eat (most of) the damn thing...

  • When I first came across the C.U.D.D.L.E. link in November (while researching how it came to be that my father's father's parents were also cousins: the husband and wife were born to sisters), it reminded me of the Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society.

Red Dwarf fans know what I'm talking about.
