Yes, there are still comments for this blog

It only looks as if they’ve vanished. What’s happened is part of Boss Ross’ usability inititative for Blogware.

If an entry already has comments, you should see something like this at the end of that entry…

Comments: n  | Permanent Link

…where n is the number of comments. You’d click on the n to jump to a page that contains only the entry, and specifically the part of that page which lists the comments.

If an entry has no comments, all you’ll see at the end of the entry is this:

Permanent Link

To make a comment, you need to go to the page for the entry itself.

Click on either the Permanent Link at the end of the entry or the the

icon that appears beside the entry’s title to see the page for that

entry. The page will contain the text of the entry, plus the usual

fields for making a comment.

Do you like this change? Let me know in the comments and I’ll pass it on to Boss Ross and the development team.

It pretty much guarantees you’ll minimize the number of comments you get. I can understand not wanting to say “Comments (0)” or something like that, but you need to expose the reader to the possibility of commenting. Maybe say something like “Comment now!” Otherwise, the only people who will know they can make a comment are people who’ve made comments in the past. The web being the web, people spend so little of their time on your site that they may not remember the particular convention for your platform, especially since everyone else does it differently. Different can be okay if it’s better enough; it’s not a good idea when it’s only a little better, and it’s really not a good idea when it’s worse, like this. Sorry, Boss Ross, but this is a really dumb idea.

I too would assume that I couldn’t leave comments. I don’t mind having “Comments (0)”, sure it’s not good for my ego, but at least people know the commenting system is _there_. Without the “Comments” folk have to click on your posting (which is fine if you like using exerpts, but I prefer putting all my post up on the main page) and then comment.

I would make more sense but it’s “Oh my God is that the time” in the morning

How is this a usability improvement? Two clicks to do what used to take one click? And buried so people would assume they can’t leave a comment to boot.

it seems like a pretty effective way to kill reader feedback, which is good if they whine and bitch a lot, but bad if you want to get a discussion going.

Can you not just have “click to enter a comment” if there are no comments otherwise your’re “comments: xx”?

From a usability standpoint, I’d say it sucks. 🙂

How, exactly, does Ross see this as improving usability? I’m genuinely baffled.

>Two clicks to do what used to take one click?

It used to take two clicks before too.

I personally don’t like it either, as it is not obvious that you need to open the entry to comment. You would get used to it, but I don’t think its an improvement.

Add another 2 pennies to the pile from people who don’t like it. With other platforms automatically having the comment button visible before a comment has been made, its not an intuitive change to shuffle it off to the individual entry page, as most of the time people don’t get past the main page.

Linking just to the number of comments (and not including the word “Comments” in it) makes the link too small.

I think the very fact that you had to explain how it works says something about the anti-intuitive nature of the design. For online folk, think “short attention span” — many people wont bother with anything that takes two clicks. Then there’s my mother. Anything that takes more than one click scares her to death. 😉

Personally, I figure that if a (blogger, UI designer, etc.) hasn’t put the link out there on the front page, then they don’t care much, if at all, for comments.

I tend to agree with the stuff that’s been said. I think that blog readers are used to being shown where to comment without having to think about it. It may be more streamlined-looking, but it won’t add to usability, and it will discourage commenting, which I’m sure isn’t the goal.

It’s a bad idea, I read “no link” to mean “no comment”. I would like to hear the reasoning behind the change as well. Should be interesting.

Keep in mind that any dumb ideas that we implement aren’t solely mine 😉

We’ve got a pretty active reseller development community that sits behind this – most changes such as this get the benefit of some pretty rigorous feedback before we implement them.

We did screw up though – this particular changed was lumped into “Misc. HTML Changes to Default Template Set” on a recent development bulletin, and as such didn’t receive as much scrutiny as it should have.

There was some pretty robust reseller discussion over the weekend and we’ve settled on modifying the default templates in the manner that I describe here: http://randomreality.blogware.com/blog/_archives/2004/1/12/13468.html#3349

You have gotta love Blogware… They have listened to our plaintive cries and are changing the system to something similar to what “anonymous” suggested.

Ross, you are a star, if you didn’t live in another country I’d buy you a drink.

> f you didn’t live in another country I’d buy you a drink.

I can take a raincheck 😉

That’s much better. I’m impressed with your responsiveness. If I hadn’t written my own blog system, I’d certainly consider yours. 🙂
