Clark Hall Pub Hitlist

Ashley Bristowe writes up Chris Turner’s Clark Standards Songlist, a compilation of the big hits at Clark Hall Pub, the engineering student-run bar at Crazy Go Nuts University where Turner and I used to DJ. The list covers Ashley’s stay there, 1991 through 1996, which overlaps significantly with mine (1987 – 1994; I DJ’d at Clark from 1989 through 1994). On the list:

  • Jesus Built My Hotrod – Ministry
  • Head Like a Hole – Nine Inch Nails
  • Debaser – Pixies
  • Cannonball – The Breeders
  • Elephant Stone – The Stone Roses
  • There’s No Other Way – Blur
  • Loser – Beck
  • Sabotage – Beastie Boys
  • Jump Around – House of Pain
  • Hobo Humpin’ Slobo Babe – Whale
  • Been Caught Stealing – Jane’s Addiction
  • Big Time Sensuality – Bjork
  • Underwhelmed – Sloan
  • Supersonic – Oasis
  • Basket Case – Green Day
  • Miss World – Hole
  • Homeboy – Adorable
  • Supernaut – 1000 Homo DJs
  • It’s the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine) – R.E.M.

The list is pretty good, but needs Ween’s Push Th’ Little Daisies, Front 242’s Headhunter 3.0, Rick James’ Super Freak, KMFDM’s Godlike and They Might Be Giants’ Birdhouse in Your Soul for good measure.

  • The list is pretty good, but needs Ween's Push Th' Little Daisies...

When I was a bartender many years ago, this was the song I kept in the CD player to blast people out to the sidewalks at closing.

  • Wow. Flashbacks. It's not as alterna-90s cool as most of the the things on that list, but wasn't the last song of the night at Clark often Spirit of the West, "Home for a Rest"? We made that the last song at our wedding as a shoutout to the many Queen's alums in attendance.

Speaking of weddings, holy chuppah Accordion-Man - congratumalations!!! Welcome to married life. Don't believe the hype - marriage is the best. Unless that's what the hype tells you. In which case, um, do believe it.

  • There are a number of songs that didn't make it onto Turner's playlist that got heavy rotation during my time at Clark Hall Pub -- enough to merit another entry. Perhaps I'll write it up.

As for the marriage thing, it's pretty sweet.

  • Again, it's the DJing at Clark theme.

Again, I feel I must comment.

The following weren't necessarily favourites of all Clark patrons, but it was a pretty safe bet you would here these songs when Phil and I were, for two years, laying the ground work for Joey and Chris to come.

Ramones - I wanna be sedated

Drastic Measures - Teddy Bear's Picnic

Forgotten Rebels - Surfin on Herion

Johnny Cash - Ring of Fire

Additionally, I don't think I ever bartendended when Joey was playing that I didn't, at least once, hear AC/DC's Thunderstruck.

In closing, there was a Clarck tape in the stereo closet that always came out after hours for cleanup and the inevitable drinks that followed. I can't recall much that was on the tape, mostly seventies and melancholy, but I do remember the appropriateness of one song without which no discussion of Clark standards is complete - The Load Out/Stay by Jackson Browne.

    Colin.

  • Just thought you guys should know that "Home for a Rest" is currently one of 3 songs on the strictly enforced DO NOT PLAY LIST.

  • Great list, pretty similar to what we had in Guelph at the Trasheteria at the time. We tended to hear Hole's "Violet" more and New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle". Thanks for the flashback, I plan to play a version of this playlist for an upcoming mini-reunion.

  • I just made a clark playlist for our recent 15-year reunion. I recall some much less cool stuff in the 86-91 time frame.

Guns and Roses - Sweet Child of Mine

Cheap Trick - Surrender (live at budokan) - I remember Perry Clarke playing this on repeat for an hour.

George Michael - Faith (responsible for the Dave Hall 'jig')

Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun

    B-52's - Love Shack

    Metallica - Enter Sandman

Still in there was some The The, Cure, Depeche Mode and Smiths. Colin, your science formal smokers were legendary and memorable for me. Even if you do hate The Smiths.

and you know they are still doing that stupid KC dance that Maggie and Tracy started.
