Only Global Nerdy Would Run a Graphic Like This

Today on Global Nerdy:

Soap on a shower floor with the Google 'I'm Feeling Lucky' button superimposed.

C’mon, would Scoble show an image like this for the story about Google deprecating its SOAP API on his blog? Arrington? Om? My newest LinkedIn buddy, Jason Calacanis? (Okay, he might, and I think Marc Canter would too.)

But seriously, folks: for smart-headed and smart-assed tech news, Global Nerdy’s the place to go.

Chanukah, Night Five: The Chanukah Song, Part III

The 'Melnorah' for night 5 of Chanukah.

Oh, yes — Adam Sandler’s Chanukah Song comes not in one, not in two, but three distinct versions! The Chanukah Song, Part III also features a guest appearance by half-Jewish, half-Filipino Rob Schneider, star of many movies I wouldn’t rent unless I was extremely, extremely hurting for entertainment.

Audio Advent Calendar #19: KITT Saves Christmas

Audio Advent Calendar, December 19.

Before Baywatch David Hasselhoff had another hit TV show: Knight Rider. Running from 1982 to 1986, it was the first of many shows based on a crime-fighting character paired with a high-tech vehicle; it inspired shows like Airwolf, Blue Thunder and Viper. While the vehicles in those other shows were impressive, none of them held a candle to Knight Rider’s car, KITT, short for Knight Industries Two Thousand (this was back when “2000” sounded futuristic and not “that was so six years ago”).

That’s because none of them saved Christmas — only KITT did that, and the tale is told in this so-bad-it’s-good rap number called KITT Saves Christmas. Enjoy!

Alpine Qaeda!

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Drummond Sweater company isn’t around any more, what with ads like this (click the ad below to see it at full size):

Old ad for sweaters with headline 'Men are better than women!
Click the ad to see it at full size. Thanks to Miss Fipi Lele and deepdisco for the picture.

The copy reads like something that the Mullah who called unveiled women “uncovered meat” would have written, had he gone into advertising:

Men are better than women! Indoors, women are useful — even pleasant. On a mountain, they are something of a drag. So don’t go hauling them up a cliff just to show off your Drummond climbing sweaters. No need to. These pullovers look great anywhere. On the level!

“Indoors, women are useful,” the ad copy may read, but looking at the two guys in the ad, I don’t think they have any use for women, nudge nudge wink wink.

But It Goes So Well with the Traditional Firewater-and-Coke and the Sacred Honey-Roasted Peanuts

[via Colby Cosh] I think Colby put it very well when he wrote:

Do Health Canada and Cancer Care Ontario hate tobacco? Of course they do. But when questions of cultural relativism enter the picture, it turns out there’s tobacco, and then there’s tobacco.

Here’s the site to which he was referring:

Screenshot of the 'Are You Tobacco Wise?' website.
Christian fundies aren’t the only ones on the stupid side of the religious-vs-science tussle. Click the picture to visit the site.

Like other long-standing religious traditions such as witch-burning and human sacrifice, there’s no health upside to tobacco. Last time I checked, anything that can get you sick just by being in fields of it is a poison. This appears to be one of those cases where the facts come up against the good intentions of “we’re white, we’re straight and we’re sorry” and lose.

Audio Advent Calendar #18: Santas of Colour!

Audio Advent Calendar, December 18.

First, a video treat from the British Indian-themed sketch comedy show Goodness Gracious Me, featuring the recurring character who says that everything that’s anything originated in India (he’s kind of like the Greek dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding). In this skit, he explains that Santa is not from the North Pole, but is in fact, Indian (“Think about it! Big beard! Huge belly! Terrible suit! Indian!“) and finishes with “Ranjeet the red-nosed reindeer”…

For your downloadable audio treat, I present to you Black Santa, a rap by Bruce L. Thiessen, a.k.a. “Dr. BLT”, in which a black guy wants a job as a department store Santa — amusing rap ensues!
