The High Park Organic Market has become a Saturday morning ritual with me and the Ginger Ninja. We set out for the market — located beside the Grenadier Restaurant, a nice ten-minute walk south of Bloor Street — to buy vegetables to turn into a salad or stir-fry from lunch, as well as some homemade bread and cake loaves.
I took these photos during our shopping trip yesterday.
All the fruits and vegetables in the market are organically grown on smaller farms, and many are grown locally. This usually means that what you’ll find at the market is fresher and often tastes much better. We once bought some locally-grown garlic that was very flavourful — the kitchen filled with the smell of fresh garlic after we’d only cut the garlic; we hadn’t even cooked it yet.
It’s not just fruits and veg, they’ve also got homemade bread, cakes and pies. We’re really fond of the banana-chocolate chip loaf.

Good pictures. Almost makes me want to eat 'healthily'.
Wicked. I know there's farmers' markets Thursdays at Dufferin Grove and Wednesdays at City Hall, but had no idea there was one in High Park, too! What's with all the food posts lately, anyway?
Are those vegetables Ontario grown organic? They look really nice.
I don't buy much Organic but I do try to buy Ontario grown at the St.Lawrence market.

@Chris Taylor: I guess food is one of my current obsessions.
@siobhan mclaughlin: They're all organic, with the in-season stuff from Ontario and the out-of-season/non-native stuff flown in. They clearly mark where the fruits and vegetables come from.
Good to hear that that market has gone more local. Maybe I was catching them on bad days last year, but they had a lot of California stuff then. Farmer's Markets rock, unless the music is bad. It looks like the High Park farmer's market has stuck to just selling the food supermarket style - or do they actually have farmers at vending tables now?
@Karen Quinn: No music, and they're selling the food supermarket style -- that is, rows of tables of food and only a handful of people minding the store.
I am very curious to know if they had any carrots. I wanted to pick up a few pounds tomorrow (Sat) at the Organic Abundance, but then I stumbled on your post :)
@Powersurge: Yes, they've got carrots. The baby-cut ones in bags are imported, but the regular carrots are local.
Great! Thanks, Joey.
