Easy to make fun of them, but after all, "Is the world flat? I don't know" is the most rigorous scientific approach for anyone who's never been in space...
She doesn't strike me as terribly scientific. In fact, her statement, "I never thought about [if the world was flat]. But I will tell you what I've thought about: how to feed my child", is an attempt to disguise a lack of learning and intellectual curiosity as motherly virtue.
It's a middle class version of the guy in the ghetto from Chris Rock's comedy routine saying "I don't know that shit! I'm keepin' it REAL!"
