This story in the Poughkeepsie Journal would be just another story about a police car chase if it weren’t for the name of the driver who was arrested: one Landocalrissian Butler, age 27. Unfortunately, the story doesn’t let us know whether his parents named him after the Star Wars character or if he had his name legally changed.

Here’s the story of his 2005 arrest
A City of Poughkeepsie, NY man faces a stint in jail for dealing crack in the city last year. Landocalrissian Butler, 25, of Winnikee Avenue, entered a guilty plea Tuesday in Dutchess County Court to attempted criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony. Butler told Judge Thomas J. Dolan he had five small bags of crack in his pocket Dec. 22 when police arrested him on Morgan Avenue. He said he intended to sell the drugs.
In exchange for his plea, Butler was promised a sentence of six months in jail and five years on probation. He will also be required to forfeit a cell phone and $432 police said he obtained through illegal drug sales.
Butler remains jailed pending his sentencing, scheduled for April 4.
I’ve heard my share of stories of drug dealers who legally change their names, so I’m willing to bet this is the case here. My favourite is the dealer who changed his name to Jungle. Just like Cher. No first or last name. Just Jungle. They seem to get a kick out of having these names read out in a court of law, and often provoking some amusing reactions from court officials, or observers. Just think of it. “Will the defendant, Landocalrissian Butler please rise…”
I’ve spent the last 12 minutes debating (yes, with myself) if, assuming he changed his first name, the last name was changed at the same time, and if so, what the significance might be.
Nothing of substance came out of it, but I feel richer for the exercise. Thanks for the link, greatest thing I’ve seen all day.
