The Racist “Obama ’08” T-Shirt

Mike Norman, a bar owner in Marietta, Georgia is selling “Obama ’08” T-shirts featuring a monkey eating a banana at his establishment. It’s crap like this that makes me doubt that we’re living in the twenty-first century and still stuck in the nineteenth:

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Norman sees nothing wrong with the t-shirt’s imagery:

Norman acknowledged the imagery’s Jim Crow roots but said he sees nothing wrong with depicting a prominent African-American as a monkey: “We’re not living in the (19)40’s,” he said. “Look at him . . . the hairline, the ears — he looks just like Curious George.”

  • And this is the problem. There are too many Americans who won't vote for a woman or a black man. It's terrible to say it, but they should be running a middle aged white guy because they're more electable.

[ I would like to emphasize that if anybody thinks my comment is racist or sexist they are misreading me, it's anti-american ]
[I guess american is a race, so it is racist, but it isn't anti-black]

  • justin, you're right, a lot of people simply won't vote for a polititcal minority (black, woman or whatever). but you have to admit, he definitely has a following and if he were running against anyone other than McCain (a living war hero), he'd probably win.

Accordian guy, fyi, comments aren't displayed properly when using internet explorer (at least not for me).

  • isn't the curious george artwork protected by copyright? that illegal artwork... that would be one more thing WRONG with this t-shirt.

  • the man selling these shirts has said he thinks it looks like obama, that this was not a racial thing. but here we go crying racist again

  • The Independent reports: Rick Blake of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, (which owns Curious George) tells the Atlanta Journal no one has been authorised to use the image. "We find it offensive and obviously utterly out of keeping with the value Curious George represents," Blake says. "We're monitoring the situation and weighing our options with respect to legal action."

  • Why should anyone be surprised. It's America and the southern region at that. What? Because a few caucasians voted for Obama in states that are mostly caucasian you're under the impression that things have changed? LOL! Please don't fooled. It's the same unbearable stench in a brand new suit.

It's not going to change as long as America is the last bastion of white supremist ideals - America is. And the US (primarily its caucasian citizens) wonder why the rest of the world has no respect.

Fix the man in the mirror first.

  • @neutron: FWIW, women may be in the minority in politics, but they're the majority of the population in the United States.

  • THAT STUFF IS HILLLARIOUS!!! I'M NOT RACIST, BUT THAT IS FUNNY AND IF YOU CAN'T FIND HUMOR IN THAT THEN YOUR NOT AN AMERICAN
