Vegans and Carnivores

This photo from Passive-Aggressive Notes made me laugh out loud:

When it comes to vegans and vegetarians, while I get along with them just fine, I’ve got to side with chef Anthony Bourdain:

Vegetarians, and their Hezbollah-like splinter faction, the vegans, are a persistent irritant to any chef worth a damn. To me, life without veal stock, pork fat, sausage, organ meat, demi-glace, or even stinky cheese is a life not worth living. Vegetarians are the enemy of everything good and decent in the human spirit, and an affront to all I stand for, the pure enjoyment of food.

  • Loved the picture and the quote.

I don't hate vegetarians/vegans, I hate militant vegetarians/vegans - the ones who claim that meat is murder. Have they ever stopped to think of how their vegetables feel about being ripped up and consumed - sometimes without any preparation!!! And plants (most of them anyways) don't have any defenses, or the ability to run away to hide.

  • I have no particular score to settle with the meat eaters or the veg folks, but this photo is indeed hilarious.

  • I like what Jeffrey Steingarten had to say: "I have always thought that people who keep a long list of certifiably delicious foods that they avoid are at least as troubled as people who avoid sex, except that the latter will probably seek psychiatric help, while food phobics rationalize their problem in the name of genetic inheritance, allergy, vegetarianism, matters of taste, nutrition, food safety, obesity, or a sensitive nature."

  • That was hilarious! I myself am a vegetarian, and anytime I tell people, I hate having to say "But, wait! you can eat meat around me. it won't offend me. I'm not all 'meat is murder' kind of vegetarian." I just never got used to the taste (I promise I've tried it!). which is why I won't go near that tofurkey crap. stupid militant vegetarians ruin it for the rest of us.

Also, re: Bourdain's quote - If you are a chef, you should really know the difference between vegetarians and vegans. Vegetarians eat milk products, and usually eggs, too. Vegans are the ones who won't eat any animal products.

And, eating vegetarians is considered cannibalism. If you're just a carnivore not a cannibal, then you can't eat vegetarians.
