The State Home for Manic Pixie Dream Girls

When you’re with a Manic Pixie Dream Girl, it’s starts off wonderfully, as if you’re living in a romantic Zooey Deschanel romantic comedy:

“Everything seemed so perfect at first. She was cute, but lots of quirky and awkward…on our first date, she said she wanted pancakes for dinner. So adorable. We danced in the rain to the music in our hearts…I felt alive!”

“But then after a few months, I started to realize she was eating pancakes for every meal. She can’t feed herself. She can’t pay bills. She just wonders at the marvel of every moment. Every moment! We got married in a fuckin’ bouncy castle!”

I’ve dated a Manic Pixie Dream Girl or two and had a disastrous non-date with one last year. While fun, they’re not very good long-term prospects. Not if you want to stay sane, anyway.

  • They were known as faeries to me and my friends and the number of them I've known is not small. Some of the more extreme were also called random chaos generators, where they could walk into a room and somehow incite chaos without any effort, at all. It amazes me how they could combine fun, destruction and trauma all at once. I'm just glad they never got together and organized themselves into a faerie apocalypse.

  • Oh dear. I'm afraid I have a long-term friend who is an MPDG. She's adorable, and I survive our friendship partially by enduring her efforts to cheerfully teach me the random extremely painful exercise technique of the moment and partially by dodging her attempts at what might best be called intuitive science and the associated pseudo-medicine. I've seen enough of her long-term relationships go up in flames that I wonder at times whether her whimsical madcappery has doomed them, but I on examination I realize that it's actually the original choice of partner that's been doomed by her penchant for making decisions based on tarot readings, whether the gentleman in question speaks the same language (better in her opinion if he does not, and that may have actually extended the longevity of some attempts), or how much the prospect likes cats and artichoke flan (The first, despite the linguistic pairing there and the MPDG effect on expected outcomes, not for dinner. The second, due to the MPDG effect on expected outcomes, possibly not for dinner either. Possibly for facial masks, art projects, or feeding to waiflike gophers).
