As I mentioned in an entry yesterday, Christine, who writes the Blogware-powered blog PurpleCar,
is in town with her husband. She’d like to meet real live bloggers
(although real live Torontonians should be just as good). We’re meeting
tonight at 6:00 p.m. at Smokeless Joe, so if you’re in the neighbourhood, please drop by and say hi!
I’m involved with a little fundraiser event for Camp Quality, a
non-profit organization that gives kids with cancer a chance to go to
summer camp for a week and support for them and their families
throughout the year. Camp Quality is special in that every camper gets
individual attention: each kid who attends is paired up with a trained
adult companion who helps them throughout the week-long campning period
and also provides support throughout the year.
As you may have guessed, running Camp Quality isn’t cheap. That’s why
we’re helping raise funds for the camp, and we’re doing this by having
an evening called “Thank You”, featuring cocktails, comics, a silent auction and schmoozing…
From the site:
Camp
Quality is hosting its first annual “Camp Quality Evening Extravaganza”
fundraiser on July 21st, 2004 at Shmooze
nightclub. There will be comedians to entertain you, finger
foods to satisfy you and bartenders to soothe you. A silent auction will
be held so you won’t have to go home empty-handed.The festivities will begin at 7:30 and will go as long into the evening
as you can. Tickets are $50 and include 3 drinks and all the entertainment
you can handle. Finger foods will be available. All funds raised will go to fund Camp Quality and their summer camps.
Camp Quality is an international charity that puts on summer camps for
children with cancer.
It’ll be a fun night out, and yes, it’s a good way to meet new single people. And for a good cause too!
If you’d like more information or want to get tickets, drop me a line or leave a note in the comments.
Christine, who writes the blog PurpleCar is coming to Accordion City
with her husband tomorrow. They’re attending a wedding on Saturday, but
they’ll have Friday night free, and they don’t know anyone in town.
Furthermore, Christine tells me that as someone who recently started
blogging, she has never met a real live blogger in person.
(Cue the nattering of cynics who say she’s fortunate.)
She contacted Boss Ross,
who unfortunately is skipping town to be a wedding guest himself, but
he referred her to a guy who likes to meet new people: me. I meeting up
with Christine and her husband at Smokeless Joe (125 John Street.
on the east side, between Richmond and Adelaide, across the street from
the Paramount Theatre and Chapters) at 6:00 p.m.. We’ll start there and
who knows where we’ll end up. If you want to join us, drop me a line,
or better yet, just drop by!
(If you want to join in and want to be sure you catch us, my cellphone number is 416-948-6447.)
Christine has an entry about the meetup here, as Ross has his here.
One piece of advice I got from my personal trainer (who, like 30 pounds of me, vanished never to be seen again) was to pick a meal plan (“Don’t say ‘diet‘, dude, call it a ‘meal plan‘,”
he’d always say) that worked and stick to it like glue. He also said
that the best way to stick to a meal plan was to have a once-a-week
“cheat day” where you could relax the rules and eat what you liked —
as long as you stuck to the meal plan for the rest of the week and
worked out often.
My “cheat day” was actually just a “cheat meal” at Chinatown Centre,
located only half a block from my house. They have an all-Chinese food
court, and I enjoy the friend rice, chinese pork and General Tso
chicken from the “any 5 items for $2.99” counter, where they know me
well.
That all changed with the news that the entire food court got shut down
by the health department, who made mention of “uninspected poultry”
sold by an “unlicensed meat store”.
Given my exposure to their stuff, I’m probably immune to food poisoning now.
Some of the nice people you’ll meet at Kickass Karaoke. Dorian, Carson (the host) and me.
Don’t forget that Kickass Karaoke takes place tonight at the Bovine Sex
Club (542 Queen Street West, just east of Bathurst). To catch a bit of
the flavour, check
out this video of the last Kickass Karaoke at the Bovine [1 MB QuickTime] featuring Johnny O singing The Kinks’ Apeman and the Bovine “regulars” (regular attendees, not “regular” as in “average” or “normal”).
While I’m on the topic of interesting things that you can see while walking down Queen Street West (just two blocks south of my house), I saw this scene outside Pages Bookstore on Saturday afternoon:
The woman in the photo was reading Fahrenheit 451. After finishing both sides of a page, she would rip it out and hand it to the man who set it alight in a makeshift brazier:
Ah, performance art.
