Florida of the Day Stranger than Fiction Tampa Bay

Just a goat at night glowing in purple light. Nothing to see here.

Seminole Heights’ seal, which depicts a two-headed alligatorThe combination of many purple-hued street lights (which are the result of a manufacturing defect) and someone’s runaway pet goat have given my neighborhood, Seminole Heights, a Final Destination or The Omen kind of feel.

Fortunately, I am prepared for this eventuality:

Scenes from this morning’s bike ride

Seminole Heights’ seal, which depicts a two-headed alligatorI like to start most days with a 10-kilometer bike ride around my neighborhood, Seminole Heights. It’s also how I do the groceries; unless it’s raining or I need to get a lot of stuff or something large, I do most of my grocery shopping on the bike.

It was a pretty morning, so I took a couple of photos. The photo above was from the start of my ride and features our yard. The one below is of Lake Roberta, which is a great cycle track — the street that surrounds it is a quarter-mile circle.

Hilarity ensues when people use “colon” when they meant “cologne”

While “colon” and “cologne” are both known for their aromas, they are indeed two very different things:

Turkey Drop

Even though I myself was the college boyfriend who displaced a high school one, I still said “DAAAAAAMN” after seeing this tweet…

…only to say “DAAAAAAMN” again when I read this response:

I began to wonder why there wasn’t a comedy film on the subject with the name Turkey Drop, but it turns out that one exists! It’s from 2019 and is largely forgotten. Here’s the trailer:

New aloha shirt #4

New aloha shirt (of many). Tap to view at full size.

Here’s the fourth of many vintage aloha shirts that I bought from Emily and Mike Stehle at last weekend’s Tampa Bay Ukulele Getaway, and it’s got swordfish aplenty!

Emily and Mike Stehle’s stand at the Tampa Bay Ukulele Getaway. Tap to view at full size.

Aloha shirts — a.k.a. “Hawaiian shirts” — are my sartorial “thing”, and the Stehles have the best selection I’ve seen in a long time. I bought a lot of them, and over the week, I’ll post them here. The photo at the top of this article is the second in the set.

Big John’s Pickled Sausage + Arby’s Vodka = The Filthy Martini!

I saw a whole rack of the above product at the grocery yesterday. I have vague memories of having some at a bar, but they’re from a while back. They’re also from that point when you’ve drunk enough that eating the pickled things in large old jars at the back of the bar seems like a good idea.

I think that Big John’s Pickled Sausage could be a key ingredient in a drink that I would call the Filthy Martini — a next-level Dirty Martini.

It would start with Arby’s french fry-flavored Vodka (which I wrote about in an earlier post)…

…and then you’d add one of Big John’s Pickled Sausages and some of that sausage-infused pickle juice to really filthy it up.

It would be a variation of Nick Bumstead’s “Joe Beef Martini,” pictured below:

Who wants to try this with me?

Veterans Day / Remembrance Day

In the U.S., November 11 is Veterans Day, a federal holiday for honoring military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces.

In Commonwealth countries (including Canada), France, and Belgium, November 11 is Remembrance Day, which honours armed forces members who have died in the line of duty.

In Poland, November 11 is National Independence Day, the anniversary of the restoration of Poland’s sovereignty in 1918 from the German, Austro-Hungarian and Russian Empires.

Take a moment today to honor those who served.
