Sample dialogue:
“Remember when people were content to be unambitious, sleep till eleven, just hang out with their friends? You had no occupation whatsoever, maybe working a couple of hours a week at a coffee shop?”
“Right…I thought that died out a long time ago.”
“Not in Portland! Portland is a city where young people go to retire.”
…
“I gave up clowning years ago.”
“In Portland, you don’t have to.”
I’ve been there, and everything in this video, a promo for a new IFC series called Portlandia, is true. Everything.

Pete Forde: So when do we move?
Yep… I’ve experience it first hand: Portland is still one of the places in the US where gay bashing (beating up homosexuals) is still totally cool
Got off the train in downtown Portland, at about 1 in the morning. Was trying to take a shortcut to my hotel. Went through a dark alley. A shadowy figure started approaching me. I braced myself for the worst, as I do in these sketchy situations. As he got within a few feet, he said to me “Hey, you have a wonderful night, bro!”
“You too… man.”
@bob: Call me highly dubious. Is it possible you’re talking about rednecks in town to frequent the strip clubs? In my experience, the only people beating up queers in Portland are other gay people.
