PSY, Britney Spears and Ellen DeGeneres: Together at Last!

I suppose this means that Korean pop star Park Jae-Sang (better known as PSY) is now mainstream: he recently made a surprise appearance on Ellen, in response to a tweet by Britney Spears in which she said she loved the Gangnam Style video and was wondering if anyone wanted to teach her how to do the dance. As you can see in the video above, he seems rather fluent in English, remarking that his performance philosophy is “Dress classy, dance cheesy”. I can get behind that.

PSY led Britney and Ellen through a quick Gangnam Style dance tutorial. Ellen, as always, appeared to have fun. As for Britney? Well…

For someone with alleged dance experience, she sure seemed lost on the 1, 2, 3 and 4. In contrast, Ellen rocked it.

That’s because Ellen had practice. Britney however was forced into a surprise “do this dance that you don’t know, with two people who do, on TV”. I’d be upset too, and I’m not even someone who makes a living doing well-rehearsed performances.

Rohan: I’m a terrible dancer, and I’d be doing the frug, watusi and funky chicken if PSY dropped by with a surprise dance lesson in front of a TV audience.

And in case anyone here thinks I merely talk a good game, here’s photographic proof of me enjoying a surprise dance lesson, both left feet and all, in front of an audience of blue-bloods.

Britney is a megapop star who was there as a very-likely-pampered guest on Ellen, to promote her show, The X-Factor, which is a pretty cushy job, even if her co-host is Simon Cowell. It’s a talk show “Silly Human Trick”, not a court case or even an audition. If she doesn’t land right on the beat, big fat hairy deal: no one loses their money, their house, their job or their life.

I think it’s a case of what Louis CK calls Everything is Amazing and No One is Happy.
